Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Radio remains a vital medium of communication in rural areas, offering information, education, and entertainment to diverse populations. In electoral processes, radio plays a significant role in educating voters, creating awareness about electoral rights, and mobilizing communities to participate in voting (Mohammed & Bello, 2024). In Arewa Local Government Area, Kebbi State, where literacy levels and access to other media may be limited, radio serves as a primary source of information for the populace. The role of radio in promoting voter turnout in rural areas like Arewa is particularly significant, as it bridges the information gap and encourages civic participation. This study examines the influence of radio on voter turnout in the area, focusing on its effectiveness in mobilizing rural communities during elections.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the crucial role of radio in disseminating electoral information, its effectiveness in influencing voter turnout in rural areas like Arewa remains underexplored. Challenges such as limited access to reliable radio content, political bias, and lack of localized programming may hinder its impact. Additionally, the relationship between radio consumption and voter turnout has not been adequately studied in the context of Arewa. This study addresses this gap by investigating the influence of radio on rural voter turnout in the region, providing insights into its role in promoting electoral participation (Ahmed & Yusuf, 2025).
